BadAss WODWOMEN Meet Cindy Sawyer From Crossfit Justice

Posted by March Garnica on

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc.). *

Mom to three awesome adult kids, grandma to four. I was married to my high school sweetheart for 39 years, sadly became a widow in November 2013. I have worked as a florist for 30 years, currently I am the Floral Team Leader at a Michigan based specialty grocery store. Summer is my favorite time of year, outdoor activities, kayaking, taking my four legged pals out for an afternoon. I love cooking, gardening (flowers and veggies). I am a beekeeper ( I have a love affair with these little creatures and an admiration for their matriarchal society). Enjoying life and embracing each day.

Which affiliate box are you training at? Which class time do you usually attend? *

When did you start doing CrossFit? *

September 27th, 2016

How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first workout? *

Facebook post for a "New You 6 Week Challenge" Oh gosh I don't quite remember my first workout, but wall balls, burpees, jumping rope were some of the things I could hardly do and thought to myself "what did I get myself into"

What were you doing before CrossFit and how were you introduced to CrossFit? *

I wasn't doing any type of fitness before Crossfit. I was leading a fairly sedentary life, although my job was physical, over a five year period leading up to my husbands death in 2013 I gained a lot of weight ,90 lbs to be exact. On August 1st of 2014 I decided I needed to get healthy, switched to a low, to no carb diet. This eventually turned into following a paleo lifestyle around the first of the year 2015. By April of 2015 I was 90 pounds lighter and feeling great. Over the course of that year I had joined the local 10 dollar a month gym, it was ok, but hard to motivate myself. Keeping the weight off was my main goal, however I knew this 50+ body needed to start a fitness program of some sort, I didn't want to be heading down that spiral of losing physical abilities we take for granted when we are young. I would see so many people my age in such bad physical shape. I knew I didn't want this to happen to me and diet alone is great, but i need to try to push my physical self to be stronger. The Facebook post for that New You Challenge changed my life. I met with the owner of Crossfit Justice and signed up. Jenn Murray is a dynamo of energy and fitness and my first meeting with her was inspiring.

How has your approach to CrossFit changed since first starting? *

Defiantly try to work on my weaknesses and form. Setting goals for sure and working toward them.

Favorite WOD or movement *

Deadlift, STO, Rowing, kettlebells

Least favorite WOD or movement *

Oh gosh I can honestly say I try to embrace them all. Because of the gains I've had over the past year and a half and scaling a lot, when I see myself moving toward a goal with a certain movement that has eluded me its hard to say that would be my least favorite. I struggle with all squat movements, so probably those.

What types of changes have you seen (mentally, physically, and/or lifestyle) since starting CrossFit? *

So many!! upper body muscles, quads, hamstrings. Along with a stronger body has came a stronger mind. Crossfit has built up my self esteem with an "I Can Do This" attitude and for a woman age 59, that a very powerful thing. I have learned age is just a number!! I have to admit when I hear people saying "Im getting old" I do the eye roll and those words don't come out of my mouth anymore!!! When I am at the box doing the wod it is me challenging my mind and body. I can get in that zone and push myself and my inner athlete.

What helps you get the most out of your CrossFit Workouts? What motivates/inspires you?

First and foremost the Crossfit Community, The coaches, The elite athletes as well as us everyday folks. Support!! As for movements the deadlift is always good for some stress relief and inspiration as I try to PR that movement about every 4 to 6 weeks.

What would you say to someone starting CrossFit for the first time? *

Don't give up, keep going and when you see those gains you won't be able to stop.

Something you might not know about me:

I'm an awesome cook!!!

What's your PR /pump up song?

corny but, probably when Coach Zach plays the Rocky theme song <3
